The weeks after you land are a whirlwind of admin, new faces and unfamiliar routines. Getting the essentials sorted early frees you to enjoy the experience you worked so hard for.
Tackle the admin first
Prioritise the practical setup: register with your university, open a local bank account, get a local SIM, and complete any required residency or police registration. Handling these in your first week removes a lot of background stress.
Build your community
Loneliness is common in the first month, and the antidote is connection. Join societies, attend orientation events and say yes to invitations, even when you're tired. International student offices exist precisely to help you settle — use them.
Look after yourself
Culture shock is real and completely normal. Keep in touch with home, maintain a routine, eat well and give yourself grace as you adjust. Within a few weeks, the unfamiliar starts to feel like home.
